Abstract
The novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in 2020 has disrupted the daily lives of people around the world. Negative psychological reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as anxiety, fear, etc., have forced countries to focus on preventive measures to prevent the spread of the virus. In this study, we used the stimulus-organic-response (SOR) theory to development our research model, to explore whether Informativeness and severity affect people's anxiety and cognitive assimilation. After that, we explored whether people's psychological state was affected, triggering the implementation of hygiene behaviors and social distancing, and whether there was a mediating response in the research model.
The sample for this study was collected through an online questionnaire. We using stratified sampling and quota sampling, the number of samples was allocated according to the population of each age group in Taiwan, and a total of 818 valid samples were recovered. The results of the study showed that informativeness and severity had a positive impact on anxiety and cognitive assimilation, anxiety and cognitive assimilation had a positive impact on hygiene behavior and social distance. Anxiety has mediating effects on both external stimuli and behavioral responses, while cognitive assimilation has mediating effects on social distance only in information.
This study is helpful for relevant units to understand the behavior of the public in the face of the epidemic, so as to provide better epidemic prevention policies for similar epidemic outbreaks in the future.
