Abstract
The digital technology develops from the computerization of workflows. With the emergence of social network, mobile computing, analysis technology and cloud computing, digitization has a different meaning. People's lifestyle has changed a lot through the combination of social media and mobile technology. Either organizations or individuals can communicate with others on networked virtual environments. This disruptive innovation has indeed brought great convenience but has also resulted in negative effect. While communicating with others and browsing the Web through mobile social network, partial users who feel exhausted when suffering from technostress tend to cut back on social media or discontinue using it.
With the dark side of technology, this research discusses the negative strain on users with the supplement of SSO theoretical framework, such as technostress from social media, stressors, the consequences, etc. The research is supposed to develop a theoretical model to explore the connections among characteristics of information, characteristics of technology, overload, and social network fatigue.
To conduct the survey, the online questionnaires were sent out to participants who use unspecified social media, and finally collected a valid simple size of 479. The analysis results indicate some types of perceived overload such as information overload and system feature overload make the users enthusiastic at various degrees, and consequently leads to a reduction in their intention of use time, and the negative effect of social medial-included technostress is verified.
Nevertheless, unlike past literature, the results of this study finds that the ubiquitous connectivity of mobile technology does not make a positive impact on information overload and social network fatigue, nor does social overload correlate directly with users’ fatigue. This might be related to different background, environment, and task factors. Except for pressure in the workplace caused by communication and task assignment, it is seemingly inevitable that most people in daily life contacts with each other through technology such as mobile devices and social network computing. With the issue of user autonomy and social network addiction, the causal relationship between ubiquitous connectivity, social overload in mobile social networking technology and user fatigue is not fully established today compared with the previous arguments.
