Abstract
This is a qualitative study aiming to explore the impact of different overtime reasons. Existing research mostly focused on overtime working leading to work-life imbalance because of physical and mental damage. Different reasons that cause employees working overtime and their influences toward one’s work-life balance were relatively unexplored. Fourteen participants with overtime experience were participated in the semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was then used to analyze the data in a more in-depth way that was provided by the participants. Findings showed that (a) for participants who have psychological ownership toward their job or organization, length of working time is not a factor that governs work-life balance. (b) negative emotional impacts within workplace diminished the boundary between worktime and personal time, which caused a serious imbalance between employees’ work and life. Furthermore, negative emotions lead to a lower subjective well-being. The primary aim of this research is to have a better understand of employees’ demand and prospect toward work-life balance and provide practical implications for enterprises establishing provisions that meet employees’ needs.
