Abstract
This thesis attempts to explore Jack London’s novels from the perspective of animal protection. American journalist, novelist, and social activist, London is best known for his animal-adventure novels: The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906). The reviews of these two works have been highly complimentary, particularly The Call of the Wild. This novel is London’s first bestseller; it’s also one of the most popular novels in early-twentieth century America. It was praised as “the most read novel in America.” London’s concerns about animal protection could be constantly found in these two novels. However, previous research on London’s novels mainly focuses on analyzing the works from the perspective of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. The number of theses themed with animal protection in London’s two novels is quite rare. Wei-Ching Chang (2012) was the first to study London’s two novels from the perspective of animal rights. Continuing the issue of animal protection, this thesis aims to read and analyze Jack London’s two novels by employing some scholars’ research of animal welfare. This thesis also discusses and analyzes the bonding and relationship between two animal protagonists and every master in their life. The aim of this thesis is to argue whether the two animal protagonists are treated properly by following the five principles of animal welfare. For this argument, it emphasizes that London intends to advocate the importance of animal welfare through the two novels.
