Abstract
After the implementation of Paris Agreement, voluntary carbon market has become one of essential mechanism for countries and companies to reduce their emissions. Considering that the current market is not transparent and full of uncertainty, it is still hard to tell whether the quality of carbon credit is good or not merely by its prices. This study attempts to understand market dynamics by analyzing the retirements of the carbon credit, thereby gaining insights into buyers' preference of the voluntary carbon market.
From a macro perspective, this study examines the impact of project attributes on retirements of carbon credit since 2004. Through the application of multiple linear regression models, we found that various project attributes influence the offsetting volumes to different extents. Notably, in the model that analyzes interaction between registries and different time sections, the result showed that the coefficient of CAR registry on the retirements has increased gradually. Such reason may be related to its convergence with California carbon trading market.
Nowadays, an increasing number of countries have chosen to establish their own voluntary carbon markets as a supplementary strategy to the compliance markets. Our findings not only help enhance the transparency and effectiveness of the voluntary carbon market but also provide a preliminary but valuable evidence for policymakers and market participants, promoting healthy market development and achieving global emission reduction goals.
