Abstract
As online media increasingly serves as the primary news source for the public, frequent exposure to negative news has become commonplace, potentially leading to information confusion among audiences. Information confusion—a psychological state that impairs individuals’ ability to process information and make decisions—serves as the central focus of this study. Grounded in Protection Motivation Theory, this research examines how three dimensions of information confusion—overload, similarity, and ambiguity—shape audiences’ protective behavioral intentions through cognitive appraisal mechanisms. Using news coverage of a well-known international regional conflict as the context, a questionnaire survey was conducted, yielding 243 valid responses. The results indicate that overload confusion and ambiguity confusion significantly increase perceived vulnerability, which, along with response efficacy, positively predicts avoidance behavior. Furthermore, perceived vulnerability, response efficacy, and self-efficacy significantly influence the intention to switch news sources. These findings suggest that when individuals perceive a threat and believe in their ability to cope with it, they are more likely to engage in proactive protective behaviors to reduce the psychological burden of negative news. This study contributes to the literature by clarifying the relationship between information confusion and protection motivation in the context of news consumption, and provides practical implications for media practices and information delivery strategies.
