Abstract |
In recent years, social changes such as declining birth rates, delayed marriage, non-marriage, and population aging have led to increasingly diverse household structures. Among these, single-person households have seen a significant rise, becoming an important component of modern society. Different household types exhibit varying preferences in household facilities ownership and housing choices. However, existing studies mostly focus on a single household type, lacking a systematic comparison across different types. Moreover, most studies primarily adopt qualitative or observational approaches, with limited use of quantitative methods for empirical validation, resulting in a relatively incomplete understanding of how household structure influences facilities ownership and housing choices. To address this gap, this study uses data from the "The Survey of Family Income and Expenditure of the Republic of China" from 2012 to 2022 to systematically examine differences in household facilities ownership and housing choices among single-person households, two-person households, and nuclear families. Additionally, this study conducts regression analysis on male and female household heads within single-person households to explore the impact of gender on household facilities ownership and housing tenure within this household type. The analysis adopts a multiple regression model, using household facilities ownership, homeownership (Definitions 1 and 2), and rental status as dependent variables, while controlling for household head gender, age, education level, and income. This approach aims to analyze the differences in household facilities ownership and housing tenure across different household types, as well as the gender-based disparities within single-person households. The results reveal significant differences across household types. Single-person households, lacking the ability to share facilities, tend to have higher average per capita facilities ownership. In contrast, nuclear families exhibit significantly higher homeownership rates, reflecting stronger economic capacity and greater residential stability. Additionally, significant differences were observed between single men and single women in terms of facilities ownership and housing choices. For instance, men tend to own more transportation facilities, while women are more likely to possess kitchen and multimedia appliances, which may be related to differing consumption preferences and lifestyle pursuits. Moreover, female household heads generally have a significantly higher homeownership rate than their male counterparts, possibly due to a greater emphasis on residential stability. Furthermore, control variables also show significant positive effects on facilities ownership and homeownership, emphasizing the critical role of demographic and economic factors in household decision-making. In conclusion, this study highlights significant differences in facilities ownership and housing choices across household types, underscoring the influence of gender, age, and economic factors in these decisions. |
