隨著職業運動產業的發展日趨成熟,球隊在人力資源配置上逐漸重視年輕化與成本效益,老將球員的價值與角色也因此受到挑戰與討論。為探討資深球員是否仍具備正向影響力,本研究以美國職棒大聯盟2015年至2024年之30支球隊為研究對象,分析老將比例與老將平均WAR值對球隊勝率與球場填滿率 的影響,並進一步納入球隊總薪資、陣容穩定率、球員平均年齡等變數為控制項,採用一般最小平方法與固定效果模型進行實證分析。 研究結果顯示,老將比例對球隊勝率具有顯著負向影響,而老將平均WAR則對勝率呈現顯著正向關係,顯示老將若具備優異場上表現,仍能有效提升球隊戰力。在球場填滿率部分,老將比例與老將平均WAR雖未呈現顯著影響,但球隊總薪資與陣容穩定率對填滿率均有正向顯著效果,顯示豪華球員名單與穩定陣容對吸引球迷具有重要性。 本研究結果反映出老將在隊伍中的比例須與其場上貢獻相匹配,否則會造成資源錯置,進而不利於球隊整體表現。本研究對球隊經營者在人力資源與薪資分配策略上提供政策參考,亦補足現有文獻中關於老將價值的實證探討。 |
Abstract |
As the professional sports industry continues to mature, teams have increasingly emphasized youth development and cost efficiency in human resource management. Consequently, the value and role of veteran players have come under growing scrutiny and debate. This study examines whether veteran players still exert a positive impact by analyzing data from all 30 Major League Baseball (MLB) teams between 2015 and 2024. The analysis focuses on the effects of the veteran ratio and their average WAR (Wins Above Replacement) on team winning percentage and stadium capacity rate. Control variables such as total team salary, stability rate, and average player age are included. The empirical analysis employs Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and fixed effects models. The results show that the veteran ratio has a significantly negative effect on team winning percentage, whereas average veteran WAR has a significantly positive effect. Regarding stadium capacity rate, neither the veteran ratio nor average WAR shows a significant effect. However, total team salary and stability rate are both found to have a significant positive impact, suggesting that star-studded and consistent rosters are key to attracting fans. These findings highlight the importance of aligning veteran player presence with actual performance to avoid resource misallocation that could harm team outcomes. The study provides managerial implications for team executives concerning roster composition and salary allocation strategies, while also contributing to the empirical literature on the value of veteran players. |
