Abstract |
With the widespread adoption of internet communication and mobile technology, instant messaging has become an important communication channel in the workplace. Although instant messaging brings convenience to work, it also leads to the phenomenon of instant messaging fatigue. Existing research mainly focuses on social media fatigue and the work-family conflict caused by using instant messaging software after work, while the discussion on instant messaging fatigue is relatively limited. This study aims to explore the causes and consequences of instant messaging fatigue by utilizing the Stressor-Strain-Outcome (SSO) model and incorporating the perspective of technostress. This study conducted a survey among workers who use communication software in the workplace through an online questionnaire, collecting a total of 390 valid samples. The hypotheses were tested using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. The results show that the ambiguity of information in instant messaging leads to information overload, and the ubiquitous nature of instant messaging also causes technological intrusion into personal life. Information overload, technological overload, and technological intrusion are three stressors that significantly affect users' instant messaging fatigue. When users experience instant messaging fatigue, they clearly feel burnout, which in turn reduces job satisfaction and increases the intention to quietly quit. This study expands the model of instant messaging fatigue by considering the technological characteristics of instant messaging as antecedent factors of stressors, and includes technostress and workplace-related variables to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the influencing factors and effects of instant messaging fatigue at work. Finally, this study proposes managerial implications based on the conclusions, hoping that enterprises can strengthen the management of instant messaging usage to maintain employees' physical and mental health, and provides directions for future research. |
