Abstract
Regret, a ubiquitous emotion experienced in the workplace, arises from suboptimal decision outcomes and plays a crucial role in shaping subsequent decision-making and cognitive processes. This study investigates the relationship between regret following decision-making and creative problem-solving capacity, an essential ability for organizational growth and adaptation. It examines the mediating roles of three distinct coping strategies individuals may adopt when experiencing regret: avoidance, rumination, and decentering. Additionally, the study explores the moderating influence of individuals' locus of control attributions on the relationship between regret, coping strategies, and creative problem-solving. Data were collected through a two-stage questionnaire from 253 individuals aged 18 and above with work experience. The results demonstrate a favorable association between regret and the capacity for creative problem-solving, facilitated by rumination, while locus of control attributions play a moderating role in these connections. This study adds to existing literature through the presentation of empirical proof regarding the intermediary functions of coping mechanisms and the regulatory impact of locus of control attributions, providing valuable perspectives on improving the creative problem-solving skills of employees following regrettable choices.
