Abstract
In recent years, LGBT-friendly corporate policies have received growing attention from both academics and practitioners, with existing literature largely focusing on their associations with firm financial performance and labor productivity. This study employs the Corporate Equality Index (CEI), published annually by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), as a measure of firms' commitment to LGBT-friendly policies, and examines its association with workplace safety outcomes.
Using a sample of 692 U.S. publicly listed companies with 5,507 firm-year observations over the period 2003 to 2022, we employ ordinary least squares estimation with industry and year fixed effects. Empirical results indicate that CEI scores are significantly and negatively associated with the frequency of workplace safety violations, penalty amounts, and the probability of violations occurring, with findings remaining robust across subsample analyses and robustness checks. These findings suggest that LGBT-friendly policies may serve as an effective governance tool for improving workplace safety performance and providing new empirical evidence for the intersection of corporate social responsibility and workplace safety research.
