Abstract |
In the context of intensifying U.S.-China competition and strong U.S.-Taiwan relations, skepticism toward the U.S. has gradually emerged on social media, particularly during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Russia-Ukraine war, and Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan. Facebook news fan pages, as key sources of information for the Taiwanese people, may influence users' cognitions and emotions through their coverage of U.S.-related events. To analyze the presence of skepticism toward the U.S. on Facebook news fan pages, this study first defines skepticism through the lens of Alliance Theory's Security Dilemma, focusing on the concepts of abandonment and entrapment by the United States. Subsequently, from the perspective of Framing Effect Theory, it explores how U.S.-related events impact users' cognitions and emotions. This study utilizes sentiment analysis, STM, and hypotheses related to framing effects to examine the influence of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Russia-Ukraine war, and Pelosi's visit to Taiwan on users. Additionally, the findings are compared with polling data from the Institute for National Defense and Security Research. The results indicate that all three events had a negative impact on users of the EBC news fan page, with only the Russia-Ukraine war affecting users of the SET news fan page negatively. Furthermore, polling data reveals that nearly 40% of Taiwanese people hold a negative view of the United States. The STM analysis further reveals that users' discussions related to skepticism toward the U.S. are negative. Finally, the verification of the framing effect hypothesis demonstrates a statistically significant negative correlation between U.S.-related posts and users' emotions, and a statistically significant positive correlation with skepticism cognition, particularly the cognition of entrapment. |
