Abstract
This paper examines the relationship between government trust and participation in social movements within the context of social capital. The study employs an experimental method, manipulating levels of government trust to observe its effect on willingness to participate in social movements. It aims to address a gap in the literature on social capital and social movement participation in Taiwan. The research finds that situational manipulation alone has limited impact on participation in social movements. However, social capital, particularly involvement in unions and leisure activities, shows a significant positive influence on social movement participation. Political interest also demonstrates a positive effect on engagement in social movements. The study further reveals differences in social movement participation tendencies among supporters of different political parties. However, demographic variables and attitudes towards cross-strait relations do not significantly affect social movement participation. These results emphasize the diversity and complexity of factors influencing participation in social movements, encompassing not only social capital and political attitudes but also individual values and experiences.
