Abstract |
In recent years, discussions surrounding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues have become increasingly prominent. Many of these discussions are closely related to everyday life, highlighting the growing importance of ESG considerations. Motivated by this trend, this study investigates the causal relationship between a firm's geographic dispersion and its workplace safety violation performance, which is associated with the Social (S) and Governance (G) dimensions of ESG. The empirical analysis utilizes data obtained from the Violation Tracker database compiled by the Corporate Research Project of Good Jobs First, as well as information extracted from annual reports (Form 10-K) filed by publicly listed companies with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The sample covers the period from 2000 to 2024. The empirical results provide evidence of a significant causal relationship between geographic dispersion and workplace safety performance. Specifically, firms with a higher degree of geographic dispersion tend to exhibit poorer workplace safety performance. Furthermore, the adverse effect of geographic dispersion on workplace safety performance is more pronounced among firms with lower levels of information asymmetry. |
