Abstract |
This study aims to explore the correlation between news topics and reporting volumes of Chinese and Taiwanese media during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2023 with text mining techniques. In this study, pandemic news data was collected from People’s Daily and Taiwanese media CTN, UDN, and LTN. Topic modeling was used to identify themes in Taiwan’s pandemic news, and cosine similarity measured content similarity between People’s Daily and the three Taiwanese media. To clarify reporting volume variations, themes were re-encoded based on topic similarity. A fixed-effects regression model controlled for variables such as publication period, news media to examine how People's Daily's coverage on various topics influenced the next-day reporting volume on the same topics by Taiwan's three newspapers. The results showed that People's Daily did indeed use similar wording to Taiwan's three major press on certain topics. However, further analysis of the keywords in the topic models revealed that, although CTN and UDN are pro-China, they subtly transformed the content from People's Daily into their own perspectives rather than copying it verbatim. In contrast, LTN, based on its institutional stance, exhibited thematic consistency but significant content divergence. Regarding to the reporting volume, every press reacts differently to the themes presented by the People's Daily, based on their audience and strategies. CTN increases its coverage on cross-strait relations. UDN increases reports on China's government achievements. LTN does not show significant statistical changes in reporting. |
