Abstract |
As times change rapidly, advancements in technology not only facilitate learning but also can lead to negative effects such as public criticism due to slip-ups or vanity. These negative consequences can foster a culture of gossip, resulting in a cynical outlook in workplace environments, which can detrimentally affect overall organizational development. This study focuses on exploring the phenomenon of negative gossip, aiming to understand its impact on cynicism. Additionally, it examines whether negative envy is a primary driver of negative gossip. The research aims to investigate the relationship between negative envy and negative gossip, and to confirm whether personality traits such as extraversion and conscientiousness moderate this relationship. Furthermore, it explores whether negative gossip mediates the relationship between negative envy and cynicism. The study targets full-time employees, collecting 97 valid responses through a two-stage sampling process. Data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS 22 and Mplus 6 to validate the hypotheses. The results of this study are as follows: (1) a positive relationship between negative envy and negative gossip; (2) a positive relationship between negative gossip and cynicism; (3) negative gossip mediating the relationship between negative envy and cynicism; and (4) higher conscientiousness potentially reducing the relationship between negative envy and negative gossip. Finally, practical management recommendations and suggestions for future research are provided for the benefit of both businesses and scholars. |
