Abstract
This research investigated expatriate experiences of cultural adaptation in Taiwan. Data was collected via semi-structured interviews with three individuals who had been living and working in Taiwan for more than one year. It was found that the standard U-curve hypothesis of cultural adaptation did not apply in all scenarios. One participant avoided the culture shock phenomenon altogether whereas the other two seemed to get stuck in the acculturation process, unable to move past the stage of culture shock characterized by the rejection of the host culture. Theoretical and practical applications were discussed.
