Abstract
Interest in meaningful work has skyrocketed in the last decades. Its importance in term of organizational outcomes have been proven by several studies. However, managers have been struggling to find ways to help workers find meaning in their work. This study aims to explain how democracy leads to meaningful work. It uses this main argument: democracy leads to meaningful work by promoting freedom and dignity at the workplace. A qualitative business case study has been used to support the argument. Information to write the case study was collected from documents written by the owner and ex-CEO of a Brazilian corporation. The analysis suggests that freedom and dignity which are promoted by democratic practices, are fundamental human needs that are source of meaning for people at work. They create naturally a set of organizational outcomes such as work engagement, commitment, responsibility, motivation etc. The paper concludes with some recommendations for managers and highlights some limitations.
