Abstract
"Binge Watching" has become a popular leisure activity in recent years. However, only limited studies have explored how binge watching influences employees’ off-job recovery and well-being. To address this issue, the present study has developed a dual-path model to clarify how binge watching after work influences next day vigor and performance via enhanced relaxation, reduced sleep hours. Importantly, the present study also included trait mindfulness and leisure autonomy as the critical boundary conditions of these effects.
This study employed the experience sampling method to collect daily data twice a day across ten consecutive workdays. Consequently, we obtained 1931 valid daily responses from 222 full-time employees. The results of multilevel path-analysis showed that: (1) Binge watching has a negative sequential indirect effect on next-day performance via reduced sleep quantity and next-day vigor; (2) Binge watching has a positive sequential indirect effect on next-day performance via increased relaxation and vigor; (3) When employees are high in trait mindfulness, the negative sequential indirect effect of binge watching on next-day performance via reduced sleep quantity and vigor is mitigated; However, when employees have high leisure time autonomy, this negative sequential indirect effect was strengthened; (4) When employees are high in trait mindfulness, the positive sequential indirect effect of binge watching on next-day performance via enhanced relaxation and vigor is strengthened; However, when employees have high leisure time autonomy, this positive sequential indirect effect was attenuated.
