Abstract
Traditional enterprises face new external challenges in the rapidly changing environment, among which the forest product industry is a representative research target. Due to the natural properties of wood products, an industry environment dominated by tacit knowledge has been raised. This research employs a qualitative method, interviews eight companies in different countries, and applies grounded theory to explain the management phenomena from the qualitative data. This study found that employees of different generations have different knowledge characteristics. Through inter-generational learning and cooperation, organizations can import new external knowledge and integrate it into the existing internal knowledge system. Such a knowledge management system can bring new core competences to enterprises and achieve cost-oriented or differentiated sustainable competitive advantages. Academically, this study supplements the relationship between knowledge management and core competence in the research context dominated by tacit knowledge. Practically, this study provides management countermeasures for the forest product industry and traditional industries in similar situations when faced with drastic changes in the external environment.
