Abstract |
This research expands on current literature in regards to the perception of sustainable efforts and business practices of hotels and accommodations as part of their eco-friendly strategy and resulting consumer intent to purchase these hotels and accommodations. Referencing the Taiwan market with consideration to consumers’ rising sustainability concerns, the study investigates how various efforts and business practices of green hotels and accommodations affect consumers’ willingness to purchase these options over options that pose increased negative environmental impact. It also looks at the role of consumers’ price sensitivity as well as the proximity of the green hotel or accommodation to other important locations. Data from 163 responses to a survey was used in linear regression to assess if perception of an accommodation’s eco-friendly strategy had a positive effect on consumer purchase intention. Price sensitivity and location proximity were evaluated as moderators. Results found that the most attractive things accommodations can do is use energy and water efficient appliances and recycled and biodegradable products, which supports current literature that says the sustainable purchasing behaviors of businesses are of increasing importance to consumers. Price sensitivity was not found to affect purchase intention toward green accommodations as strongly as previously observed, but the location of a hotel or accommodation does play a significant role in consumers’ willingness to purchase green hotels, particularly distance from places and attractions planned to visit. This study provides insight into what hotels and accommodations should prioritize as they develop and adapt to market and legal demands for sustainability. |
