Abstract |
This research compares the situation of migrant workers in the Dutch manufacturing and Taiwanese manufacturing sector. The main line of argument is that migrant workers in the Dutch manufacturing sector are treated better and that they have more opportunities compared to migrant workers in the Taiwanese manufacturing sector. The data is collected through online interviews in the Netherlands, face-to-face interviews in Taiwan and observations, in which I created additional context by using the ‘Thick Description’ method. The data shows similarities and differences in seven different themes, which are: 1) Reason to Work Abroad; 2) Recruitment Process; 3) Living Conditions; 4) Working Conditions; 5) Difficulties; 6) Adaptability; and 7) Job Opportunities. This in-depth qualitative research shows that migrant workers in the Dutch manufacturing sector already have more freedom and opportunities from the recruitment process till future perspectives, which means that migrant workers have the option to build up a future in the Netherlands. They are treated like native workers and have the same opportunities as them, while migrant workers in the Taiwanese manufacturing sector are being discriminated and are used as a ‘labor worker’ without any promotion opportunities. |
