Abstract |
This qualitative research aims to explore the factors that motivate Generation Z (GenZ) Nicaraguans to engage in volunteer work at non-profit organizations (NPOs) by adapting the functionalist theory of motivation. Semi-structured interviews were implemented with a sample of GenZ Nicaraguans who had previous volunteering experience at nonprofit organizations. The findings of this research reveal that GenZ Nicaraguans are primarily moved to engage in volunteering by the Values, Career and enhancement Functions. The values-based motivational function highlights the importance of personal values, such as religion, empathy, and a desire for serving others. Career-based motivational functions indicate that GenZ individuals view volunteerism as an opportunity to gain practical experience and reaffirm their career goals. Finally, the enhancement-based motivational function reveals that volunteering offers GenZ a path for experiencing a sense of development and belonging. Furthermore, it was mentioned by participants that social media plays a pivotal role in attracting GenZ to engage in volunteer work at NPOs. These findings have practical implications for NPOs looking to attract, motivate and retain GenZ volunteers. |
